I am deeply fascinated in all aspects of fashion, specifically fashion from a sociological and cultural perspective. I am interested in what makes fashion such a significant aspect of the human experience. I spend my time researching fashion academically through journal pieces and books, as well exploring the brands which I gravitate towards on a personal level. I have knowledge of fashion from both a theoretical, and business-oriented outlook. My belief is that you cannot write good copy about fashion without first understanding it from a theoretical level (whether that is sales writing, product descriptions, advertising, social media posts, or articles).

During my First Class BA Hons in Philosophy and Law degree, I studied a myriad of topics relevant to fashion, such as: aesthetics, personal identity and self-hood, liberty and autonomy, and existentialism. I studied the work of philosophers such as Michel Foucault, Emmanuel Levinas, and Immanuel Kant; I consider these people to be huge influences on how we view fashion from an academic stance.

Additionally, I took a university module on narrativity and storytelling, where I learned the fundamentals of building and weaving narratives. This is especially useful for writing engaging adverts and About Us pages, and overall conveying brand stories and building brand identity.

Adorn Yourself Accordingly - A book on Fashion Philosophy

I have recently written a book on the philosophy of fashion, exploring the aesthetics and phenomenology of clothing from the perspectives of Martin Heidegger and Søren Kierkegaard.

This text is an examination of how the clothes that we wear have a profound ability on the persons that we are. The focus is on how personal identity intermingles with the artistry, aesthetics, and inherent social elements of clothing.

At the heart of this book is the belief that autonomy is paramount within our clothing. We can use clothes to expand our identity beyond ourselves, or we can use them to provide a calmning and anesthetic stasis, necessary for meditation and personal development.

This book is separated into five chapters, four of which are rich with fashion philosophy and theory. The fifth chapter is a short story, designed to convey the topics within this book in a clear and creative way.

The title of the book is from a quote by the Greek stoic philosopher Epictetus: "Know, first, who you are, and then adorn yourself accordingly".
